Teacher Education
Instructor: Brenda Straley
Program Description:
This program is designed to introduce students to the field of education including special education. This program offers a starting point for an education pathway at most Utah colleges and universities. Students will gain hands-on experience working with children in K-12. During this year-long course, students will have the opportunity to spend time in five different classrooms. Students will learn classroom management, instructional strategies, assessment, and data collection as well as the opportunity to look deeper into the history and future of education.
Program Objectives:
Students who enroll in this program are expected to have excellent attendance, be dependable and reliable in both the JATC classroom and practicum settings. The program involves significant hands-on practice and student observation. Students will be assigned to practicum experiences that will provide experience in a wide variety of educational settings. Students will also travel to various schools within Jordan School District to observe classrooms and related services. Students must provide their own transportation to and from these activities. Students learn skills and ethics in the workplace that are applicable in a variety of careers and personal settings. To remain in this program, students must maintain at least a “C” average throughout the semester
Costs/Fees:
Brenda graduated with a B.A. from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and her M.Ed from the University of Utah.
My first teaching experience was in a small village in Rukungiri, Uganda, in East Africa. I went on to teach at a therapeutic wilderness program in Montana until I began graduate school. After graduate school, I taught special education for seven years before teaching at Jordan Academy for Technology and Careers. I have taught concurrent enrollment classes for over 13 years and have developed and managed Jordan School District’s Teacher Education Program during that time. I currently serve as an adjunct professor at both Salt Lake Community College and Utah State University. CTE is my passion and I love finding new teaching methods that increase student motivation and learning.
I enjoy spending time hiking, gardening, woodworking, guitar, camping, and traveling off the beaten path with my family. The more obscure, the better as I love a good adventure!
